Description
François POMPON (1855–1933)
‘Polar Bear’
A design conceived and exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1922, and produced by the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres exclusively between 1924 and 1934; our example is dated 1931.
Glazed porcelain.
Marked with the rose mark ‘Sèvres, Manufacture nationale, France’ and the date letter ‘D’ in an ink stamp applied under the glaze, beneath the right hind leg (1931).
Height: 20.5 cm
Length: 39 cm
Note:
The contract was signed on 5 November 1923 between François Pompon and the Manufacture to produce the piece, and came to an end in January 1934. Only 632 examples were produced for the Sèvres edition, in bisque, crackled enamel and glazed versions between 1924 and 1934. The glazed porcelain version was produced in much more limited numbers than the matt bisque version.
The moulds were destroyed in accordance with the terms of the contract, at the artist’s request.
