Alexandre IACOVLEFF (1887–1938) Portrait of the President (Ana Lopez Ross), Skyros, 1936. Red chalk and pencil on paper, inscribed, signed, dated and titled in the bottom right-hand corner, ‘To the dear President, the photographer of the classical expeditions, A. Iacovleff Skyros, 1936’. Height: 37.7 cm Width: 27.4 cm The second wife of the Chilean billionaire Arturo Lopez Perez, Ana Lopez Ross (1885–1974) always welcomed and supported Alexandre Iacovleff. She often hosted him at her château in Vosves, Neuilly, as well as aboard the Gaviota. To express his gratitude, the artist presented her with several self-portraits bearing respectful dedications. From 1927 onwards, he produced a number of portraits in which he captured her elegant and austere bearing. Here, in this red chalk drawing, we see her pensive gaze and solemn demeanour. Even whilst reclining on a deckchair, this woman commands respect. We would like to thank Mrs Caroline Haardt de La Baume, an expert on the work of Alexandre Iacovleff, for writing this entry.
