Description

Alexandre IACOVLEFF (1887–1938) Portrait of a Man (presumably Arturo Lopez Perez), Aegina, 1936 Red chalk on paper, positioned, dated and signed in the bottom left-hand corner, Height: 37.3 cm Width: 27.3 cm The moustachioed man has a commanding presence and appears to be wearing a white dinner jacket. It is plausible that this is Arturo Lopez Perez (1873–1949), the Chilean ‘guano king’, aboard his yacht the Gaviota, in the company of his second wife Ana Lopez Ross and their daughter Anita Lopez. We would like to thank Ms Caroline Haardt de La Baume, an expert on the work of Alexandre Iacovleff, for writing this entry. This lot will be included in the catalogue raisonné of Alexandre Iacovleff, currently in preparation.
