Description
Alexandre IACOVLEFF (1887–1938) Portrait of a Young Woman, Corinth Canal, 1936 Red chalk and pencil on paper, inscribed, signed, localised and dated in the bottom right-hand corner. (to Marcus/ Piripe/ Canal of/ Corinth/1936) Sketches of animals in the bottom left-hand corner. Height: 37.3 cm Width: 27.3 cm The red chalk retains a lovely freshness, with some wear marks on the paper. With her tousled hair, this gentle face with full lips and a tanned complexion smiles at her beloved. The dedication to Marcus says it all! In the bottom left-hand corner, the pencil sketch of the animals (a cow, a cat, a dog, a donkey with a cockerel on its back and a hen between its legs) bids farewell to the master. Everything seems to suggest a portrait of the artist’s wife, given by the artist to a man named Marcus, who is leaving his native farm and his wife to set sail on a cruise. We would like to thank Ms Caroline Haardt de La Baume, an expert on the work of Alexandre Iacovleff, for writing this entry. This lot will be included in the catalogue raisonné of Alexandre Iacovleff currently in preparation.
