Description
IACOVLEFF (Alexandre). Drawings and Paintings from the Far East. Paris, Lucien Vogel, 1922. Folio size, text booklet with yellow silk covers, loose-leaf plates in the publisher’s slipcase, an illustrated edition comprising 50 colour plates, a portrait of the artist and 4 in-text illustrations by Alexandre Iacovleff. Limited edition of 150 copies, numbered and signed by the illustrator; this copy is no. 77. This publication arose from the artist’s two stays in China, where he first travelled in 1917 as a student at the St Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. His first journey took him to Beijing and then to Mongolia for two months. He devoted most of his second stay to the study of Chinese theatre. It was in Japan, ‘amidst the wooded scenery of the Japanese valleys, so different from the yellow plains of China’, that he concluded his journey (introduction by Victor Goloubew). Ex-libris manuscript. Note: This publication stems from two visits to China by the artist Alexandre Iacovleff, who first travelled there in 1917 as a fellow of the Academy of Fine Arts. His first journey took him to Beijing and then to Mongolia. He devoted most of his second stay to the study of Chinese theatre. It was in Japan, ‘amidst the wooded scenery of the Japanese valleys, so different from the yellow plains of China’, that he concluded his journey (introduction by Victor Goloubew).
