Description
Francis SMITH (1881–1961) Illustrated letter to Armand. Ink and watercolour on paper. Signed. Height: 26 cm (visible) Length: 20 cm (visible) Francis Smith, born Francisco Smith in Lisbon in 1881, was a Portuguese painter who became a naturalised French citizen and settled in Paris in 1907. Close to the Portuguese artistic community in the capital, he associated in particular with Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso and Eduardo Viana, and from 1911 onwards took part in the first major events of Portuguese modernism. His work, deeply imbued with nostalgia for his native country, is dominated by views of Lisbon, its working-class neighbourhoods, staircases, gardens and street scenes. His painting, with its deliberately poetic and simplified style, is characterised by a peaceful atmosphere, soft light and a delicate colour palette. A distinctive figure of the École de Paris, Francis Smith’s work is now held, notably, at the Centre Pompidou and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
