Jean PROUVÉ (1901–1984) & Jules LELEU (1883–1961) ‘Martel de Janville’ A design created for the interior of the Geoffroy Martel sanatorium in Janville and produced around 1936 by the Ateliers Jean Prouvé. Armchair with a steel sheet frame, entirely lacquered red, featuring armrests that extend into the base. Upholstered in cream-coloured tufted fabric. Height: 91 cm Length: 58.5 cm Depth: 80 cm Slight signs of wear. Provenance: Model designed for the interior of the Geoffroy Martel sanatorium in Janville, Plateau d’Assy, Passy (Haute-Savoie). Note: In the 1930s, Jean Prouvé and Jules Leleu collaborated on the interior design of sanatoriums, notably the one at Martel de Janville on the Plateau d’Assy. Leleu designed the interiors, whilst the Ateliers Prouvé produced a large proportion of the furniture. Made from bent and lacquered steel, wood and fabric, these pieces combine functionality, hygiene, lightness and economy of materials.
