Jean PROUVÉ (1901–1984) & Jules LELEU (1883–1961) ‘Martel de Janville’ A design created for the interior of the Geoffroy Martel sanatorium in Janville and produced around 1936 by the Ateliers Jean Prouvé. A bed with an integrated bedside table made from red-lacquered folded sheet metal, featuring a door, a recess and a swivelling drawer. Top and base in stained oak. Upholstered in cream-beige tufted fabric. Height: 92 cm Length: 200 cm Depth: 133 cm Slight signs of wear. Provenance: Model designed for the interior of the Geoffroy Martel sanatorium in Janville, Plateau d’Assy, Passy (Haute-Savoie). Bibliography: Emmanuel Bréon, Françoise Siriex and Bruno Foucart, *Leleu: 50 Years of Furniture and Interior Design, 1920–1970*, Éditions Somogy, 2007. Note: In the 1930s, Jean Prouvé and Jules Leleu collaborated on the design of sanatoriums, notably the Martel de Janville sanatorium on the Plateau d’Assy. Leleu designed the interiors, whilst the Ateliers Prouvé produced a large proportion of the furniture. Made from bent and lacquered steel, wood and fabric, these pieces combine functionality, hygiene, lightness and economy of materials.
