René Gabriel trained at the École Germain-Pilon and then at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris. From the 1920s onwards, he established himself as a versatile interior designer and creator, working with furniture as well as wallpaper, textiles and ceramics. His meeting with Francis Jourdain, from whom he adopted the idea of simple, modular and affordable furniture, played a decisive role in his development.
From 1927 onwards, Gabriel developed his research into mass-produced furniture, notably with the ‘RG elements’, designed to be placed side by side and stacked. His understated and rational aesthetic was part of the renewal of modern French furniture and, whilst not adopting its most radical positions, aligned with the principles of the Union des artistes modernes.
In the post-war period, he played a major role in the furniture of the Reconstruction era, designing affordable furniture from as early as 1944 for those affected by the war and working with Auguste Perret on the fitting-out of standard-type flats in Le Havre. By prioritising wood, structural simplicity, economical use of materials and mass production, René Gabriel thus became one of the pioneers of French industrial design and exerted a significant influence on the generation of Marcel Gascoin, Pierre Guariche and Jacques Hitier.
