Description
Huguette BERTRAND (1922–2005) Untitled. Gouache, ink and pastel on paper. Signed lower left. Height: 71 cm Length: 91 cm Provenance: Galerie GALARTE, 13 rue Mazarine, 75006 Paris – 1992. Huguette Arthur Bertrand moved to Paris in 1945 and attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. At the heart of the new École de Paris, she rubbed shoulders with artists such as Jean Dewasne, Jean Deyrolle, Serge Poliakoff and Martin Barré, and later with Pierre Soulages, Hans Hartung, Zao Wou-Ki and Gérard Schneider within the circle of the art critic Michel Ragon. After early works closely associated with geometric abstraction, she developed a freer, more gestural style of painting, based on masses of colour, line and texture. Her work evolved towards a lyrical abstraction characterised by fluid, ethereal forms, which earned her, notably, the Prix Fénéon in 1955.
