Description
Jean COCTEAU (1889–1963) A signed autograph letter on blue paper addressed to Mrs Poisson, the owner of a hotel on Rue de Rivoli, dated 30 May 1938. “Dear Madam, I would have sorted things out long ago had it not been for Mr Laulaumier, your manager, causing a scene at my home – something I am not used to and which is uncharacteristic of both you and Mr Poisson. I left the hotel because of Mr Laulaumier, whose behaviour and words were different when I was present than when I was absent. Mr Laulaumier refuses to come to an understanding with Mr Muller and refuses to acknowledge the arrangement he accepted – as he told me – with your customary kindness and goodwill. I would be delighted to see you and to speak in a manner which I believe one should never depart from. You and Mr Poisson have often told me that you were pleased to have me at the hotel, and I believe I have always been a decent guest. Things are happening behind your back which, alas, are making the hotel unliveable for many people, and I am not the only one to complain and to ask you, as friends, to bring your manager to order and teach him how to behave towards your long-standing clientele. Mr L.’s tone could, moreover, land you in serious trouble, were it not for the fact that he is addressing people who do not wish to complain and who know that you are unaware of this unspeakable behaviour. Please tell Mr Muller how you would like me to settle my debt, for you are well placed to know that the slightest change entails heavy costs and, alas, sometimes necessitates courteous arrangements. Yours faithfully and respectfully, Jean Cocteau. P.S. Please forgive me, but it was my duty to warn you, as you might lose people without realising why.
