- Cover of the magazine *Arts PTT*, No. 75, March 1976.
Miró had previously been commissioned by the postal service to design a stamp featuring one of his works, issued in September 1974 to mark Arphila 75. This stamp is, after the one by Georges Braque in 1961, the second French stamp to feature the work of a living contemporary artist. This collaboration continued in 1976 with Miró’s design for the cover of the magazine Arts PTT in March 1976.
We would like to thank the ADOM for confirming the authenticity of this work. An ADOM certificate will be issued to the purchaser on 16 September 2026.
Text by Emile SIMON, President of the magazine *Arts PTT*, in issue no. 75 of the magazine, March 1976:
The new format of our magazine *Arts P.T.T.* was launched just two years ago, featuring the work of Alexander Calder …
Today, a change of scenery! It is Miró who is calling the shots, with a vision that is undoubtedly more complex than Calder’s…
I would like to emphasise that this is a significant event for our Society and that, following on from Calder’s contribution, Miró’s generosity fills us with joy….
I, in turn, shall share with you a few insights into interpreting this work by Miró, which everyone is free to decipher and interpret in their own way.
On the one hand, the central ‘figure’ of the composition, with its tentacles, represents the multitude listening to itself and its surroundings. This symbol contains the symbol of the eye (or individual), directed towards the symbol of the telephone situated on the outside. On the other hand, the letters P.T.T. are arranged with arrows, in keeping with Miró’s customary practice when he wishes to convey movement. Finally, black and white are used as fundamental colours, in accordance with the principles of an entire artistic movement within contemporary art; these values bring out the best in two shades of blue and one of red, in a profoundly French colour palette.
It was hard to imagine that our wishes could be so fully, so perfectly fulfilled.
May the brilliant Catalan painter rest assured of our gratitude and of the pleasure we shall take in discovering, every quarter, a new issue of *Arts P.T.T.* opening with one of his works.
Our friends will see the two covers alternate each year: 1976 is the year of Miró. I believe we could not have offered the P.T.T. artists a finer celebration.
