A Milanese architect and designer, Angelo Mangiarotti was a leading figure in post-war Italian design. A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano, he spent time in the United States in the 1950s, where he met Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe, amongst others, before collaborating with Bruno Morassutti.
His work is based on an exploration of materials, structure and formal simplicity. Marble, stone and wood are worked according to principles of interlocking and gravity, giving rise to furniture that is both sculptural and functional.
His collaborations with Cassina, Artemide, Knoll and Danese have helped establish his work as a benchmark of 20th-century Italian design.
