Note:
A Franco-Swiss painter born in Naples, Wanda Davanzo trained in Paris before settling in Cagnes-sur-Mer, where she rubbed shoulders with figures such as Bram van Velde, Jean Villeri, Marie Raymond and the Renoir family. After nearly twenty years in Argentina, she returned to Paris in 1964 and joined the Second School of Paris movement.
Supported by the art critic Michel Tapié, she developed a lyrical abstraction based on gesture, mark-making, colour and the construction of space. She helped found Groupe V alongside artists such as Roberto Altmann, Victor Laks, James Pichette and Zenderoudi, and maintained a close artistic relationship with Gérard Schneider.
Her work is characterised by a free and dynamic style, typical of post-war Informel art.
Bibliography:
Michel Tapié, “Telle Davanzo se Devient”, January 1972: “True art lovers need only let themselves be carried away by the enchantment of this artistic magic they seek in what ought to be a work of art: in this sense, Wanda Davanzo’s work reassures us, in the boundlessness of its artistic and aesthetic evolution."
