From the 1990s onwards, Yoshitomo Nara established himself as a leading figure in Japanese contemporary art. Trained at Aichi University of the Arts and later at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, he is influenced by popular culture, punk and rock music, as well as imagery from childhood. His paintings, drawings and sculptures feature childlike figures with ambiguous expressions, conveying a mix of innocence, loneliness and rebellion. His minimalist style, drawing on references to both Japanese and Western culture, results in a body of work that is both intimate and universal. Close to the independent Japanese art movements of the 1990s, Nara has thus developed an instantly recognisable aesthetic, situated at the crossroads of contemporary art, illustration and popular culture.
