Description
MANISES: ‘Hispano-Moorish’ earthenware dish, decorated in the centre with a cobalt-blue eagle within a shield from which fourteen rays extend, each adorned with a frieze of stylised motifs on a lustrous ochre background. The reverse is decorated with concentric lustrous bands on a buff-coloured background. Diameter: 35.5 cm (minor chips to the rim). This piece is characteristic of production using the technique passed down by Muslims who had settled in Spain since the 8th century, and reflects the influence of Mudéjar art following the Christian Reconquista. After an initial high-temperature firing to set the blue decoration, the metallic lustre was fixed by a second firing at a low temperature.
