Alphonse Terpereau was a photographer from Bordeaux who began his career around 1863. He was the stepson of the photographer Frank de Villecholle. Terpereau specialised in views of his region but also made a name for himself as a railway photographer attached to the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi, particularly thanks to his views of the Garabit Viaduct during its construction. He also produced numerous portraits. He died in Bordeaux in 1897. ‘Like his stepfather, Terpereau used the Poitrineau photographic carriage, but he had modified it so that two operators could work on large-format plates without getting in each other’s way. He then reduced the bulk of the equipment even further…”, states the catalogue *Regards sur la photographie en France au XIXe siècle: 180 masterpieces…* (BNF, 1980, no. 144). “In 1876, he brought to market the Terpereau portable darkroom, which he had invented. It was the use of this equipment that enabled him, when working outdoors, to control with the utmost precision the modelling, subtlety, contrast and sharpness—all qualities that have earned his work its well-deserved reputation. ’ says Pierre Bardou, *Photographers in Gironde*, 1993. The address appearing on these photographs is 30 Cours de l’Intendance [Bordeaux], a address he occupied from 1871 onwards, according to Voignier, *Répertoire des photographes de France au dix-neuvième siècle*, p. 237.
