Early 20th-century VIETNAMESE school: Self-portrait of the artist. Oil on jute canvas. Signed ‘Liu’, dated 1937, located in Paris in the bottom left-hand corner. On the reverse: handwritten label ‘Portrait of a Vietnamese man’, 59 Boulevard Montparnasse, Paris 14th arrondissement; ‘Artes’ label, 26 Rue Vavin. 100 x 79 cm According to the owners, this may be the work of a painter named Liu Ven Sing. The father of the current owners is said to have met the painter whilst he was studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
