Description
CHINA: A pair of copper deer with cloisonné enamelling. They are depicted standing, with one front leg raised, and rest on a rectangular base. Late 19th century.
H: 43 – W: 24 cm. (probable damage to the mouth)
The deer, a classic symbol in Chinese mythology, is pronounced ‘lu’ – a homophone for ‘favours’ and ‘official emoluments’ – and embodies wealth, nobility and success in the imperial examinations.
As a faithful companion of Shou Lao, the God of Longevity, and the goddess Magu, they together symbolise longevity in the Taoist tradition. The deer is reputed to live a long life and remains the only animal capable of finding the mushroom of longevity, the ‘lingzhi’. It features in traditional Chinese paintings and on various types of objects, such as incense holders, droppers, boxes, incense burners, lamps and mirror stands. Its production spans several centuries, from the Han dynasty to the present day, and encompasses a variety of materials, including hard stones, jadeite, nephrite, rock crystal, porcelain, bronze, and cloisonné enamel (...).
