Description
Hoàng Tích Chù (1897–2003), Indochina School of Fine Arts, Class XI (1936–1941):
Landscape with a Banana Tree in Vietnam
Oil on canvas. Signed ‘Huong Tich Chù’ and dated 1937 in the top left-hand corner, and countersigned on the reverse.
64 × 85 cm
The exceptional nature of this work lies in its precocity: 1937 was his second year of study at the Indochina School of Fine Arts. Indeed, the previous year, he had joined the 11th intake of the Indochina School of Fine Arts, alongside other artists such as Nguyen Van Ty, Nguyen Tien Chung and Tran Van Lam. During this period, he won the Angkor Prize following a three-month stay in Cambodia, where he painted, in particular, Angkor Wat, monks and the local people.
Many of the artist’s works are now held in museums such as the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow, or in private collections.
