Plain silver stemmed goblet. Paris 1711 Master silversmith: Jacques Trouvé, admitted to the guild in 1680 Tulip-shaped, it rests on a small moulded foot. The neck is adorned with a double, slightly moulded beading. Height: 8.5 cm, diameter at the neck: 8 cm Weight: 108 g. The large-scale melt-downs ordered under Louis XIV, notably that of 1709 intended to finance the war effort during the War of the Spanish Succession, led to the disappearance of a considerable proportion of civil and religious silverware. Added to this destruction were the successive melt-downs imposed by changing tastes or simply by the value of the metal. Pieces bearing hallmarks from the 1710s are thus valuable examples of silversmithing from the waning years of the Grand Siècle, whose rarity today confers upon them particular historical and heritage significance.
