Description
COINS OF RENNES LUD. XV. REX CHRISTIANISS. Bust of the king facing right in coronation robes with a cravat and grand cordon. Below, DU VIVIER. F. R/. URBS. RHEDONUM. INCENSA. RESURGENS. ‘Destroyed by fire, the city of Rennes rises again’. The turreted city of Rennes, standing on the left, presenting the new town plan to the king. It leans on the city’s coat of arms. Below, REST. SUO. In the exergue, COM. ARM. 1728. ♦ Feuardent 8747 Silver token of the ESTATES OF BRITTANY 1728. (6.95 g) Very fine. The reverse refers to the reconstruction of the city following the fire of 23 September 1720, which raged for six days and destroyed around 900 houses in the city centre. Under the orders of Mayor Rallier du Baty, the reconstruction was entrusted to the engineer Isaac Robelin and carried out by Jacques Gabriel, the King’s chief architect. The city centre, with its winding alleyways, was thus replaced by streets laid out at right angles. Stone, as a building material, replaced wood, which had been banned.
