A rare round hot-water plate in polychrome porcelain. China, East India Company for the Indian market, 19th century, circa 1800. Decorated in the centre with a coat of arms depicting a Bengal tiger and an elephant, accompanied by a motto and surrounded by polychrome flowers and rosettes with gold highlights, set within eight panels with alternating blue and white backgrounds. Coat of arms associated with Bahadur Shah II (1775–1852), the last Mughal emperor. Width: 29 cm Height: 5 cm Signs of wear to the decoration A similar piece is reproduced in *China for the West* by David Howard & John Ayers, ref. 487, p. 475.
