Description
A rare carved walnut mantelpiece It comprises three sections: a hearth base, surmounted by a stepped bevelled mirror and a small pediment. It is remarkably carved and adorned with small cattails and shells. It is set within a mirror frame and features a small Breton man carrying a bowl and a Breton woman carrying a jug. It is embellished with freestanding columns. The finely carved lower section features a frieze likely depicting sailing ships off the coast of Saint-Malo. The base features two musicians, one playing the bombarde, the other the biniou. It rests on small moulded plinths decorated with holly leaves.
