Conceived as a direct complement to the Barcelona armchair, the table embodies the founding principles of modernism championed by Mies van der Rohe: geometric purity, structural clarity and the celebration of industrial materials. The X-shaped base, made of polished flat steel, conveys architectural rigour whilst retaining a classic elegance. Produced from the post-war period onwards by Knoll International, with whom Mies van der Rohe collaborated closely, the Barcelona table became one of the iconic designs of the 20th century. Its minimalist and timeless design illustrates the architect’s famous principle: ‘Less is more’. Today, the Barcelona table remains an icon of modernist design and features in the permanent collections of numerous international museums.
