This work is of exceptional significance for our understanding of the artists of the École de Paris, a movement which brought together, in particular, numerous foreign artists—mainly from Eastern Europe—who came to Paris in the early decades of the 20th century to discover the innovations and experiments of the avant-garde.
Nikola Martinoski was one of them. Born in Macedonia, then a province of the Ottoman Empire, he is now regarded as one of the leading figures in Macedonian painting. In particular, he bequeathed a significant portion of his works and his collection to his hometown of Kruševo, where a museum is dedicated to him.
Dated 1929, this work bears witness to the artistic explorations undertaken by the artist during his time in Paris and to the influence of the avant-garde of the period. The synthesis of forms, reminiscent of Cubist experiments, is combined here with an Expressionist inspiration—dynamic and at times unsettling—characteristic of certain works by the Slavic painters of the School of Paris.
