Charles GIR (1883–1941). A bronze casket with relief decoration, in the Art Nouveau style, with a rectangular body resting on four foliage-decorated feet. The lid, richly adorned with floral and plant motifs, features an entwined couple in the centre, set against a backdrop of foliage. It is signed and dated 1911 in the bottom right-hand corner. A frieze of foliage and flowers adorns the edges and the base. Lock on the front. The interior, lined with leather, is adorned beneath the lid with a handwritten, illuminated poem evoking Tristan and Iseult. It is signed ‘CH. GIR’ and dated 1911 in the bottom right-hand corner. Beneath the base is a dedication reading ‘For Mademoiselle Vix’, copy No. 3. Height 16 cm, Length: 28.5 cm, Width: 17 cm. Geneviève Vix, born Geneviève Brouwer in Nantes on 31 December 1879 and died in Paris on 25 August 1939, was a French soprano. She was a descendant of the Dutch painter Adriaen Brouwer.
