Description
Jean DEMOULIN, master cabinetmaker, 1755. A veneered secretary desk with butterfly-wing inlay and a frieze framed by composite mouldings. It opens via a drawer in the front panel, decorated with simulated fluting, a drop-down panel and a double-leaf door in the lower section; the drop-down panel reveals seven drawers and four compartments, whilst the door conceals shelves and a storage space. It stands on small, straight legs. Grey marble top. Chiselled gilded bronze fittings: oval lock plates decorated with knotted ribbons, foliage rosettes and acanthus leaves on the legs and around the base. Stamped ‘J DEMOULIN JME’. Height (excluding the marble top): 140 cm. Width: 78 cm. Depth: 32.5 cm. Jean Demoulin (1715–1798) served his apprenticeship in Dijon before settling in Paris around 1745, on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, and was recognised as a master craftsman in Paris in 1755.
