Description
A case for a ball programme, in Martin lacquer and vermeil. In the style of the 18th century, circa 1900.
Flared in shape, it opens with a hinged lid. The decoration, set against an olive-green background, features a monochrome gold design of cupids surrounding a medallion, which is likely a polychrome portrait of Queen Marie-Antoinette, surmounted by the inscription ‘à la plus belle’ (to the most beautiful); on the reverse, the medallion is adorned with two flaming hearts on a pedestal. The lid bears the inscription ‘Souvenir’ in a cartouche on one side and ‘d’amitié’ on the reverse.
Vermeil setting with an interlaced border.
Hallmark: boar’s head and goldsmith’s mark BC, a single leg.
Dimensions: approx. 9 x 5 cm.
