Description
A charming box for wedding sweets, circa 1820. Round in shape and made of partly guilloché-patterned cardboard; the lid, edged with mother-of-pearl, features a central raised engraving depicting a young woman on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, seated at the foot of a fountain, with a faithful dog at her feet. Diameter: 8 cm In the first half of the 19th century, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela remained a vibrant devotional practice in several regions of France, particularly in the west. Whilst men still made up the majority, women – sometimes very young – also undertook this long journey, most often in groups or under the protection of other pilgrims, either to fulfil a vow or as an act of personal piety. The return journey was marked by the collection of blessed mementoes (scallop shells, rosaries, medals or certificates), which were kept as tangible proof of the pilgrimage’s completion. Testament to both a deep faith and exceptional mobility for women of that era, these objects illustrate the enduring nature of the Jacobean tradition long before its contemporary revival.
