Bishop of Quimper from 1823 to 1840, Monsignor de Poulpiquet de Brescanvel was one of the leading figures of the Catholic Restoration in Brittany. A former émigré during the Revolution and close to legitimist circles, he devoted his episcopate to the reorganisation of the Diocese of Quimper and Léon, the development of ecclesiastical education and the revival of religious works. This miniature is a valuable iconographic record of a prelate who helped to shape the spiritual landscape of Finistère in the 19th century in a lasting way.
