LUBA, Democratic Republic of the Congo Fetish bust of a male ancestor. Wood, with an old brown patina, thick in places. Height: 40 cm Length: 13 cm Note: A people settled in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Luba developed, from the 16th century onwards, a kingdom structured around a sacred monarchy and a system of succession based on the memory of the ancestors. Sculpture plays an essential role in this culture. Ancestral figures, characterised by an enlarged head—a symbol of knowledge—feature in ritual practices linked to power, divination and domestic altars. They ensure the continuity of the group by embodying the presence of the ancestors, who are the guarantors of social balance and the legitimacy of the authorities.
