Description
MUMUYE, Nigeria Statue with a laterally compressed head. Wood with an aged honey-coloured and brown patina, traces of white pigment. Signs of wear, erosion on the feet. Height: 71 cm Width: 19.5 cm Note: This figure is distinguished by a particularly bold sculptural composition: the slender, powerfully articulated body rises to a head that is strongly compressed laterally, almost reduced to a flat plane, brought to life by the large lateral discs. This pursuit of abstraction and controlled imbalance is entirely in keeping with the Mumuye artistic language and lends this work a strong sculptural uniqueness.
