Description
BWA, Burkina Faso Hybrid wolf and buffalo mask. Wood covered with natural red ochre, white and brown pigments. Signs of wear. Height: 82 cm Length: 33 cm Note: This mask combines several zoomorphic features in a symbolic composition: the large horns forming a circle evoke the buffalo, whilst the strongly projecting muzzle is reminiscent of that of a canid. The large concentric eyes, emphasised by a raised pupil, in turn suggest a nocturnal bird, such as an owl. This superimposition of animal features forms part of the visual language of Bwa masks.
