Description
MALEKULA ISLAND, Vanuatu, Melanesia Témès Nevimbur puppet head, with protruding nose and eyes Earthen mixtures, pig’s teeth, plant fibres, giant spider’s web, natural pigments, aged patina and signs of wear. Height: 20 cm Length: 21 cm Depth: 20 cm Note: The Témès Nevimbur were ceremonial puppets associated with the men’s societies and initiation rites of Malekula. Their composite technique — earthy materials, plant fibres, spider’s web, pigments and pig’s teeth — is characteristic of these creations. The bird-like representation of this specimen, rarely seen on Témès heads, constitutes a remarkable iconographic feature.
