Description
KANAK, New Caledonia Ceremonial axe with a fish-shaped blade. Carved and polished nephrite, hardwood with an aged russet patina and signs of wear, coconut fibres and red fabric. Height: 47.5 cm Width: 7.5 cm Note: Nephrite was one of the precious materials in ancient Kanak society. Green stone blades were prestige goods, likely to circulate within trade networks between chiefdoms or to be kept and passed down as part of their wealth. Whilst individual blades are relatively common in collections, complete ancient examples, such as this one, are rarer.
