Description
JAPAN – Edo period (1603–1868) Hampo. Half-mask in glossy black-lacquered wrought iron, with a pronounced chin, fastening tabs on the cheeks for the kabuto cord and a sweat vent beneath the chin. The interior is lacquered red (the colour red was believed to inspire courage and conceal blood). ‘Yodare-kake’ (neck guard) with five tiers, made of glossy black lacquered wrought iron and blue silk braiding (with some missing sections), the reverse side glossy black lacquered. Height: 20 cm Length: 17 cm Width: 9 cm.
