Description
JAPAN – Edo period (1603–1868) A samurai half-mask, known as a ‘Mempo’, made of black-lacquered wrought iron (with slight damage). It features a prominent chin, a movable nose, a full moustache made of horsehair, pierced nostrils and a sweat hole beneath the chin. The interior is lacquered red (with some damage and restoration). Four-tiered throat guard in gold-lacquered iron and yellow silk. Dimensions: 20.5 x 18 x 16 cm.
