Description
BRUSSELS MANUFACTORY, Flanders, early 18th century, c. 1710–1725 Diana and Actaeon An episode from Ovid’s *Metamorphoses* Silk and wool tapestry, with a high proportion of silk threads. Remarkably fresh colours, beautifully fine weaving and splendid polychromy. It depicts Diana, caught bathing by Actaeon, in a wooded landscape with pastoral and hunting themes. Diana and the female figures are shown by a fountain on the left; Actaeon, a hunter armed with his bow and quiver, stands on the right, whilst his hounds occupy the foreground. The landscape is embellished with architectural elements rendered in perspective. Height: 215 cm Width: 158 cm Restorations. Note: A Brussels tapestry depicting Diana, attributed to the Leyniers’ workshops, is held at the Rijksmuseum. An earlier reference to a ‘Diana and Actaeon’, described as an early 18th-century Brussels tapestry, also appears in the 1913 Ghent catalogue. Comparable works: Louvre Museum, Paris; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Knole, National Trust; Bayreuth Castle; MSK, Ghent.
