18th-century FRENCH SCHOOL. Portraits of Philip V of Spain (1683–1746), Duke of Anjou and grandson of Louis XIV, and his mother, Marie-Anne of Bavaria (1660–1690). Pair of oil paintings on canvas, mounted on board. 18th-century carved and gilded wooden frames. Height: 41 cm Length: 33.5 cm Restored and repainted. Note & history: Philip V of Spain (1683–1746), grandson of Louis XIV, ascended the Spanish throne in 1700 and founded the Spanish Bourbon dynasty. His accession triggered the War of the Spanish Succession, a major conflict affecting the balance of power in Europe. Marie-Anne of Bavaria (1660–1690), wife of the Grand Dauphin Louis, son of Louis XIV, was Dauphine of France and mother of Philip V. Through her marriage, she embodied the dynastic alliances between the Houses of Bourbon and Wittelsbach.
