Description
Gérard-Jean GALLE (1788–1846)
A pair of finely chiselled and gilded bronze candlesticks. The fluted truncated conical shaft is adorned at its top with a basket of flowers supporting the lampshade, which emerges from a motif of water leaves alternating with roses. They rest on a base with relief decoration against an amati background of garlands of flowers, acanthus leaves and butterflies.
Monogrammed ‘GF’ beneath the shaft.
Height: 33 cm
Biography:
Gérard-Jean Galle (1788–1846), French bronze artist, son of Claude Galle. Trained in his father’s workshop, he took over its management in 1815 and upheld the excellence of the Galle firm. Specialising in gilded bronzes, notably clocks, candelabra and light fittings, he was awarded a silver medal at the 1819 Exhibition of Industrial Products.
The monogram ‘GF’ – possibly standing for ‘Galle Fils’ – is commonly recognised as his signature.
