Description
Jean-Pierre CORTOT (1787–1843) ‘The Soldier of Marathon Announcing Victory’ A major work in patinated bronze. Signed on the plinth, numbered ‘873’ and bearing the mark of the founder Barbedienne in Paris. Height: 66 cm Length: 73 cm Signs of wear, minor scratches. Note: Jean-Pierre Cortot studied sculpture under Antoine Bridan at the École des Beaux-Arts and was awarded the Grand Prix for sculpture in 1809. Presented at the 1822 Salon, the plaster model of the ‘Soldier of Marathon Announcing Victory’ was a great success and led to a commission for a marble version for the Tuileries Gardens. The work entered the Louvre in 1877, and smaller bronze versions were cast by the foundryman Barbedienne.
