Description
Attributed to Jean-Baptiste COROT (Paris, 1796 – ibid., 1875)
The Durance at Low Tide, July 1851 or 1854.
Oil on canvas.
Height: 54 cm
Length: 65 cm
Formerly had a hole. Previously re-lined.
Notes:
In July 1851, Jean-Baptiste Corot was staying in Brittany and, following the tides, he explored the Durance and its banks both on foot and by boat in the company of Louis Jules Etex and the painter Ernest Dumax (1811–1888), to whom Corot readily offered advice. Studies from this period, produced in Saint-Brieuc, bear a rather similar style to this view of the Durance on a grey day.
