Pierre-Jules MÈNE (1810–1879) ‘Norman Mare and Her Foal’ A substantial bronze group with a nuanced brown patina. Early edition cast Height: 46 cm Length: 61 cm Width: 23.5 cm Rare minor impact marks and wear to the patina. Bibliography: Poletti and Richarme, Pierre-Jules Mène, catalogue raisonné, model reproduced on p. 86, under no. CHE30. Note: The original wax model was exhibited at the 1868 Salon (no. 3749), followed by its bronze version at the 1869 Salon (no. 3592). Regarded by Mène as one of his major works and a particularly fine achievement, the group was exhibited once again in bronze at the 1878 World’s Fair (no. 1345).
