Description
"Narcisse" ["À la vie qui s'éloigne"]: autograph poem, signed. 1 1/2 p., two-sheet in-8°, black ink on wove paper, signed "Emile Verhareren", several erasures and corrections in the same hand (traces of folds, traces of mounting on verso bl., ms. annot. in graphite in another hand). - Autograph manuscript of this poem of 30 lines published posthumously in the collection "À la vie qui s'éloigne" (Paris, Mercure de France, 1924, pp. 126-128). The corrections provide several interesting variations on the published version. While two of them are minor and correspond to the published text ("Au va et vient" instead of "Le va et vient"; "Et reviennent palper son torse" instead of "Et s'en reviennent [...]"), the four heavily reworked lines at the end offer a markedly different lesson: "Ses yeux fouillent les eaux dolentes / Puis regardent ses mains tremblantes [...] / Oh! this pond in the moonlight / That hallucinates and bothers him" (the version used in the printed version) have been crossed out and replaced by "The wind brushes the slow leaves / And caresses his trembling hands [...] / The nearby pond that bothers him / Mirrors his features in the moonlight". This document thus bears witness to a state of work prior to the published version, and is of genuine genetic interest.
