Description
Analyse des infiniment petits, pour l'intelligence des lignes courbes. 4to: [18]-181-[2] pp.; 11 pl. (age-toned or sl. browned, marg. damp stain, browning on pl. p. 94). - First edition of the first complete treatise ever written on differential calculus, including the original publication of ideas by Leibniz and Johann Bernouilli. As such, this textbook by the French mathematician L'Hospital (1661-1704) is a mathematical milestone. On p. 145 he provides a technique to evaluate limits of indeterminate forms, the "L'Hospital's rule". Although the rule is attributed to him, the theorem was actually the work of Bernouilli. Illustrated with 11 fold. pl., 2 headpieces (1 armorial) and 2 tailpieces. - Ref. Honeyman 2006. - Prov. Musnier de L'Hérable (contemp. ms. entry).
