Provenance
Formerly in the collection of Mr René Le Moigne, a chromist and lithographer who was in charge of the Atelier Maeght until 1982, and of the Atelier Lelong until its closure in 1988
Then passed down through the family
Conceived in 1971, the series *Cartes per a la Teresa* plays on the double meaning of the word *carta*, referring to both a letter and a playing card. The numerous playing cards superimposed on the lithographs allude as much to the artist’s extensive romantic correspondence as to the esoteric dimension of chance and the game of chance. In a raw material imbued with mysticism, Tàpies suggests the fleeting presence of a female figure, who dissolves into vast swathes of colour, enigmatic symbols and everyday objects affixed directly to the lithographed sheets.
“Tàpies’s involvement with printmaking came at the invitation of several publishers, and he welcomed the new techniques it involved and the relationships he established with master craftsmen in printshops. He immediately sought to challenge the flatness of paper [...] Tàpies has created some fifteen hundred printed images and has also devoted sustained attention to book illustration, producing some thirty-five volumes in collaboration with a range of contemporary poets. This is hardly surprising, given that he is an avid reader, essayist and committed bibliophile whose library rivals his painting studio as a centre of his life.” (Deborah Wye).
