8. A patinated and gilt-bronze mantel clock depicting Pallas Athena atrributed to Gérard-Jean Galle, circa 1820 She is depicted standing, wearing a helmet and a drapery, and holding a spear in her right hand; her left hand rests on a shield on which the dial is inscribed. The rectangular plinth-style base is made of red griotte marble and embellished with applied bronze motifs. 26.5cm wide, 15cm deep, 62cm high (10in wide, 5 1/2in deep, 24in high) Daughter of Zeus, said to have sprung fully armed from his head, Athena is the goddess of wisdom, craftsmanship, military strategy and civic justice. One of the major figures of the Olympian pantheon, she embodies the balance between strength and intelligence. Her attributes include a helmet, a golden spear, a shield adorned with the head of Medusa, the aegis and the olive branch. Her associated animal, absent here, is the owl.
