Description
15. A patinated and gilt-bronze clock depicting Actaeon, first half of the 19th century
Actaeon, standing and clad in a drape, leans against an altar-shaped plinth on which the dial and movement are set; on top is a reclining stag, and to the left a dog, a spear and a quiver. The rectangular base depicts Artemis on the hunt. Small feet decorated with scrolls. (signs of wear, oxidation, minor losses, no key, no balance wheel), 37.5cm wide, 14.5cm deep, 53.5cm high (14 1/2in wide, 5 1/2in deep, 21in high).
During one of his hunting expeditions, the young hunter Actaeon unexpectedly comes upon the goddess Artemis and her attendants while they are bathing. To punish his indiscretion, the goddess transforms him into a stag. He is then hunted down and torn apart by his own hounds, who no longer recognize him
