33. Two 19th century figures in chased gilt-bronze depicting seated winged Victories
The two victories are seated on chairs with upturned backs, on which their tunics are draped; the rectangular bases are patinated and feature a Medusa-head motif., 18cm wide, 9cm deep, 33cm high (7in wide, 3 1/2in deep, 12 1/2in high).
The personification of military or moral victory, and a highly popular decorative motif, Victory corresponds to the Greek goddess Nike. Depicted with wings, she bestows crowns and palms upon triumphant heroes.
